IGT (Impaired Glucose Tolerance)

Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT): Fasting blood glucose levels may be below 6.1 mmol/L, but during the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), the 2-hour value ranges between 7.8 and 11.1 mmol/L.

High blood sugar levels can harm the cardiovascular system even if diabetes has not yet developed and only prediabetes is present. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to check blood sugar levels at least once a year to detect carbohydrate metabolism disorders as early as possible.

Steps to Take if You Suspect Impaired Glucose Tolerance or Belong to a Risk Group:

The first step is to undergo laboratory testing.

Laboratory testing is available without waiting at our clinic in Szeged and surrounding areas on weekdays between 5:30 AM and 8:00 AM, following prior appointment scheduling. The glucose tolerance test, part of the examination, is conducted by a diabetes nurse or diabetes educator.

From a medical perspective, this is the most informative time for fasting blood tests, as data relevant to risk factors may vary due to daily fluctuations, potentially leading to misleading results.

Based on laboratory results, consultations with our diabetologists are available, and if necessary, with our dietitian as well.
